Reviewed by Peggy Jo Wipf for Readers' Favorite Burning Water by Inge-Lise Goss begins another sleuthing job for Gwynn Reznick, a rookie investigator with a habit of snooping. Ruben, her boss and boyfriend, is scheduled to solve this case with Gwynn, but something called him away, leaving her with minimal supervision. An employee of H&E Oil has died under mysterious circumstances and Gwynn needs to question friends and co-workers while uncovering clues he may have left behind. She finds there is more to this case than meets the eye, and Ruben sends extra operatives to back her up. There are more questions with every answer she uncovers. Gwynn finds she must flirt with the enemy to solve some problems but will this cause trouble in her relationship with Ruben? Through an intricate weaving of characters, the thrill of suspense, and expected danger, Inge-Lise Goss devises an alluring novel. Burning Water is a complex book that keeps the reader deeply engrossed as the plot intertwines with a more devious plan. Gwynn and Ruben learn that they are investigating more than a suspicious death as Gwynn digs deeper. The pace quickly takes the reader through a whirlwind of events and people. This story has a unique setting that makes it refreshing. I found Inge-Lise Goss to be a gifted and intriguing author. Her twists woven within the characters intensify as the story unfolds. Any of the characters could be the killer. The plot thickens as it involves more people. Overall, this novel is well written and makes the reader feel they are right there looking over Gwynn’s shoulder. Gwynn is a fun character that thinks differently and therefore gets the job done. Having read The Cost of Crude, and Cisco Bandits, in Ms. Goss’ Gwynn Reznick series, I was already hooked, by the characters, suspense, adventure, romance, and mystery that surrounded Gwynn. She had begged, and been hired to work for Ruben, and his team of oh so secret private investigators. Although a newbie in the arena, she was very well trained, but a minx for stepping just a bit over the line, in her efforts to prove herself. Just like books one and two, I absolutely could not put Burning Water, (book 3) down, but kept saying just one more chapter until my eyes were burning, and I could read no more that day. I loved Burning Water, a murder mystery to die for. I hope that Ms. Goss has a book four in story for those of us who love this series. Oil Is Vanishing From The Cisco Field And Revealing It Becomes A Death SentenceNewly trained and ready to rock her first assignment, Gwynn Reznick goes undercover posing as an accountant for the Prudell Energy Company. AA Pearce 5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and Suspenseful Thriller Verified Purchase I love thrillers, but the one thing I’m always missing is a story with a strong female in the lead role. And that’s exactly what this book has. Gwynn Reznick is a resourceful young woman, who knows her stuff when it comes to stealthy, undercover operations, and she uses all her skills and charms to get the job done. The one thing I really loved about this book is how the author managed to portray Gwynn as a skilled undercover operative, or PI, in a world of high stakes business without sacrificing her femininity, or having her do her job using seduction, etc. which seems to be the stereotypical role of women in thrillers. Overall, the book is very well written and well paced. The author has a clear and concise writing style and I had no trouble picturing the scenes in the book as they unfolded. The twists and turns will keep you guessing right up to the end, and, believe me, you’ll be glued to the page for the duration. I know I was! Highly recommended for all thriller fans! M. M. Bishop Award-winning author and poet 5.0 out of 5 stars A THRILL A MINUTE - ENGROSSING, AND BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN Verified Purchase I thought that The Cost of Crude was fabulous, but little did I know that Ms. Goss would take the Gwynn Resnick series five steps higher in Cisco Bandits. It was/is a book that is a thrill a minute, leaving you guessing from the beginning to the last page just who, what, and why so many people were dying (supposedly) by accident. I adore the characters, each one is fully formed, and you feel as if you’d love to know some of them, and yes, work for Ruben, except of course that danger is usually best read about. The twists and turns of the plot keep you reading far into the night. Why I even had to plug my kindle in to finish reading, as I couldn’t put it down and the book was way to engrossing to stop for the night. Ms. Goss has a rare talent for pulling the reader into the story and making it so real you feel as if you are there. I highly recommend this series, now on to Burning Water, as I must see what happens to Gwynn Resnick on her next assignment. 5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry that induces a rich and enlivening read... The poems in EMOTIONS convey the author’s views about nature, love, relationships, life and death. My usual preference is to read novels and memoirs yet, after my read of the author’s real-life story, ‘Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal,’ I found myself gravitating towards her poetry. The poetry in EMOTIONS is poignant; the flow of words in each poem induced in me a rich and enlivening experience during my read. Although many of the poems are validations of Ms. Bishop’s personal emotional roller coaster ride due to her life’s experiences, it often felt as if the author was writing about my own. I resonated deeply with “Fire Within,” “Invisibility” and “Lessons of Life”– each triggered vivid memories and gave me pause to reflect on aspects of my own journey through life. The poems in ‘Nature’ took me into a place of nostalgia, moments when I took more time to pause and listen to the world around me. The poetry in the category, ‘Silly Me,’ took me back into childhood; they are simply delightful. “Death I Am Not Afraid” and “Life’s Miracles” are two that especially resonate with the person that I am today. Marta Moran Bishop continues her journey in Sunlight and Shadows. This book of poetry, unlike A Poet’s Journey: Emotions, is a more thought-provoking book. In its pages, she covers everything from God to life after death, war, and the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Still, she is able to bring to life the beauty and grandeur of her surroundings and make us laugh, cry, think, and feel. Sunlight and Shadows will once again, take you on an emotional journey through life. She believes it is how we deal with despair, tragedy, and joy that define us as human beings. 5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and rich...reminds me I am not alone.
It is rare for me to read a book of poetry – stories are my usual preference. After being captivated by the author’s stories, however, the reviews written for her poetry captured my interest. In SUNLIGHT AND SHADOWS, some of the poems are powerfully raw: edgy, spunky, and intense – like ‘Shackled’ and ‘Innocence Lost.’ The author bares her soul and because she did, her poems gave me a strong sense of fearless courage in the face of daunting challenges. I did not need the details usually found in a story to understand. In other poems, the tones are whimsical and daring, as in ‘The Dance;’ and, in a few, her expressions are poignantly thought-provoking relative to current issues, as in ‘You Should Have Known.’ A favorite life-theme of mine, transformation, is the thread that I found to be richly woven into the poetry of SUNLIGHT AND SHADOWS. Several of my favorites are: ‘I Wonder,’ ‘If You Believe,’ ‘Honor,’ and ‘Bright Spirit Show Us the Way.’ Enlightened by my read, the poetry written by Marta Moran Bishop sits next to my reading chair – for moments of reflection and to remind me that I am not alone on this journey through life. A book of short poems/stories written in verse from a child's perspective that can be read and enjoyed by young and old alike. "Marta Moran Bishop is stunningly talented. This wonderful book is not only cha rming, but it holds a bit of magic on each page ... the kind of magic of days gone by. The beautifully rendered prose urges us to remember, to close our eyes and revisit slower days, childhood days, when there were no cell phones or computers to distract us from seeing the wonders in nature and the world of make-believe..." - Beth Hoffman, Author of NY Times Best Seller, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt "...Throughout the pages of Wee Three, author Marta Moran Bishop takes the reader on a poetic trip back in time to the simpler, carefree years of our youth, when nothing was more important than chasing bumblebees or taking jovial walks through the snow... Kudos to Bishop for highlighting the essence of innocence in such fun-filled, comprehensive fashion." - Wendy Paulson - Apex Reviews Recapture the pure joy of life when one's imagination was the key to play. Right from the first pages, you are caught! As I read on, I became more and more enthralled with the characters and story. Mind you, I am not usually interested in the Oil and Gas industry, but even the descriptions included of pipelines, etc., managed to hold my interest, as they were important in the discovery of who were the bad guys. I fell completely in love with the beautifully written, and well-defined characters as they entered stage left or just fell into your lap as the saying goes. It is no wonder that Ms. Goss has been on both the USA Today and Amazon bestselling author list, she deserves every award and accolade if all her books are as great.
