Laura Hamilton wakes up one morning only to find out a dead body inside her apartment. It was, after all, her ex-coworker, "Velcro" Hodges, a debt collector who was known to leech on his prey until the debt is already paid in full. But why was he dropped insider Laura's room? Now someone wants Laura to be dead. As the plot thickens, Laura tries to find out on who could possibly want her next to be in cold blood. Lead Detective Inspector Jeff Gibbons helps her, tracking any leads he gets, but that doesn't seem to help solve the puzzle. 5.0 out of 5 stars Meet Laura in this fun first book in the series Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2017 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase Great first book in this fun series that I read out of sequence and still enjoyed very much. Corpse magnet, Laura, is on her own in this first book written before Gerry joins her on her misadventures. She's a funny, sarcastic, unpredictable character who takes up sleuthing when a dead body turns up in her apartment. More than a little motivation, that's for sure! Several secondary characters add interest along with more than a little sleaze as Laura sets out alongside Detective Inspector Jeff Gibbons to find out whodunit. I'm not going to tell you that, of course, or reveal how Laura figures it out. You need to read this book and have the fun doing that for yourself. 5.0 out of 5 stars DEATH TAKES US ALL Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase Dead on arrival, a Laura Hamilton murder mystery by Karen Vaughan is a must read for anyone who loves a mystery with a bit of twisted humor. I love children's books written in a singsong rhyming style reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and this book was just what I was looking for. The cadence of the rhyme along with the skillful illustrations rapidly engages the youngster's attention as they follow the characters on their search for the 'golden ruler,' A fun and enjoyable read, this book also imparts an important lesson for youngsters without being preachy. My great-nephew thoroughly enjoyed it and, I hope, took away with him a valuable concept. I can recommend this book without reservation to any who have young children in their lives M. M. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Story For More Than Children Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2016Format: Kindle Edition Once again Sherrill Cannon has written a wonderful story with a very special message. The Golden Rule, penned for the young, but is much more than a brilliantly written rhyming tale. It teaches how great it would be if everyone to gave to each other what they would like to receive. The illustrations are charming and go wonderfully with the story. Ms. Cannon's clever and intelligent gift for telling a story in rhyme that does not talk down to a child, but instead is consistently at their level is unsurpassed in today's children's books. When his partner is discovered in a frozen alley with eight bullets in his chest, Niagara Falls Police Detective Roger Frey swears vengeance. But Detective Chief Woodward has forbidden him or anyone else on the detective squad to work the case. Emlyn Goode knows Roger will disobey his boss, which will cost him his job and his freedom. Because she cares for him more than she’ll admit, she needs to stop him. Desperate, she can think of but one way. Emlyn recently learned she’s a direct descendant of a woman hanged as a witch in 1692. She has a book filled with arcane recipes and chants passed down through her family. Possessed of, or perhaps by a vivid imagination, she intends to use these to solve Jimmy’s murder before Roger takes revenge on the killer. But she’s new to this “witch thing,” and needs help from her friend Rebecca Nurse, whose ancestor also took a short drop from a Salem tree. Rebecca’s not much better at deciphering the ancient directions, and while the women stumble over spell after spell, the number possible killers grows. When Chief Woodward’s wife is shot and a bottle bomb bursts through Emlyn’s window, it becomes clear she’s next on the killer’s list. 5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Twist of a Mystery!
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2016 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase I fell in love with The Magic of Murder! It is a charming, funny, and very interesting twist of a mystery! I enjoyed following Emlyn Goode in the discovery of her family heritage and her unique abilities as well as finding out who did it! I admit it was quite a surprise to find out who it actually was!!! Emlyn is a delightful character, I loved her humor. Even Elvira made me laugh many times. It was easy to slip into the minds of each character and see through their own eyes the events which were unfolding and taking place around them. Being a resident of the Niagara area it was wonderful to be able to picture in my mind all the places mentioned throughout the book. Sue has written an awesome story, definitely worth 5 stars and more. Cant wait to read the next one, hope there will be many more to come! A Dime is a Sign: Poems of Love and Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon walks us through emotions that we all feel.
It is a glorious collection of some of the most beautiful poems of our generation. There wasn’t one that didn’t strike some cord in my heart and soul, to lie there and make me weep for loss or fill my heart with the glory of love. Some of those that struck me the deepest were ‘Wall of Apprehension,’ a poem of fear to allow another in. Perhaps, the other will reject what you are, or you will feel by their response that you were a bother. ‘You, Friendship – I Love,’ helped me to realize that my shutting others out, for fear that my gestures would be mistaken for something else and I would find despair in the trying. And ‘Premature Goodbye,’ hit a chord deep in me for all those that I walked away from or that walked away from me, without the chance of explanation or renewal. Ms. Cannon, outdid herself ‘A Dime is a Sign’ for she speaks directly to our hearts and souls. Whether it be a love poem or a poem of loss and sadness, this book holds something that will touch everyone. It is a book to be cherished, reread, and savored time and again, for, in it, we will find our common humanity, our dreams of love, fear of loss and rejection, the joy of being, and we will grow more fully as humans. In these stories and five others, Solomon explores the persistence of memory and the promise of hope. POEMS OF LOVE AND LOSS - A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS BY MULTI-AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR SHERRILL S CANNON2/10/2020 Have you ever loved, been loved, been confused about love, or suffered from loss of love? All these feelings have been captured and shared in the words of heartfelt poems, compiled over many years by a former teacher and award-winning author. Sherrill S. Cannon now shares her thoughts in this book of feelings. "As a teacher, I used poetry to help counsel many troubled teens and friends, and have continued this pattern throughout the years." There are three sections in her book: Heads, Spinning, and Tails ... (Love & Loss: Coin Toss?). The variety of lyrical poetry forms include free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets. Some poems are simply plays on words. A Sign In the depths of my winter I heard a small bird - Braving the cold, Bringing the word. He gave my heart hope As I heard him sing - Three little notes Promising spring. Sherrill S. Cannon, a former teacher and grandmother of 10, is the author of nine acclaimed rhymed children's stories that have received 48 national and international book awards between 2011 and 2017. Also a playwright with seven published plays for elementary school children, her works have been performed internationally in over 20 countries. Most of her children's books try to teach something, such as good manners and caring for others. Married for 57 years, she and her spouse are now retired, live in Pennsylvania, and travel in their RV from coast to coast, spending time with their children and grandchildren. A Penny For Your Thoughts: Poems of Love and Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon - Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Co. book review by Michael Radon - The US Review of Books "For if I knew ahead of time, then I Would live my life according to its end; And never give the present, time to try" This collection of poetry examines love, as so much poetry tends to do, but the perspective here is unique. That romantic euphoria and devastating heartbreak are seen as two sides of the same emotion. Split up into three sections, the first and third are polar in their approach, either bubbling with affection or profound in examining what was lost or what was never had to begin with. The middle section offers a little bit of both, tying in experiences that are related to being in love or emotions that come along with a relationship or marriage. The poems themselves also cover a variety of forms, ranging from free verse to sonnets and concrete poetry to haiku. Containing over 100 poems, the poet's musings on an aspect of life that tends to be powerful no matter how it's experienced will emotionally reach readers of all ages. This volume is singular in its focus but powerfully broad in its approach and form. By taking just the idea of love and then presenting it from both a positive and negative perspective, or by applying different poetic constructs to it, the results end up significantly varied and stay fresh. Most poems occupy a single page with only the longer forms stretching to a second, and so readers are encouraged to enjoy at whatever pace suits them best. Love's prominence as a subject for poetry owes to both the strength at which it is experienced as well as the universality of it, as everyone experiences it in various ways. The author's ability to look at it and present it in so many different ways speaks to her skill as a poet and her deep understanding of the emotional spectrum. ©2018 All Rights Reserved * The US Review of Books This review was written by a professional book reviewer with no guarantee that it would receive a positive rating...The US Review of Books is dedicated to providing fair and honest coverage to all books. A MUST READ: STORIES AND EMOTIONS FLOW THROUGH EACH VERSE.
In years past, poetry was written and enjoyed by many, today there is the idea, including among some professors, (who I have heard say, they don’t understand poetry.) That insinuates that a good or great poem is something that is indecipherable to most. I am not one of them, as with great poets, such as Maya Angelou, Robert Stevenson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, there is a story in the poems, a sense of place and emotion flowing through the verses. ‘A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS,’ by Sherrill S. Cannon is one such book. It is rich in emotion, stories flow through the verses, and tales of love and loss are ripe within its pages. It is a glorious book that should be savored from start to finish and this reader feels that one would have to be devoid of life experience not to find many in this book that do not strike a cord deep inside of them. Ms. Cannon’s poetry takes on the issues of grief, dying, being the object of idolatry, as, in her poem Pedestal, love, loss, and letting go. A magnificent journey through life. A few of those that struck a deep chord in me was ‘Pedestals,’ That tells us the tale of someone who is stuck upon a pedestal and cannot become truly human for fear of losing their love. ‘The Real Me,’ that speaks of the little part of oneself that is seldom if ever shown to anyone. ‘To See The Future,’ shows us all that we might lose if we could see the future. For we would no longer be living in the present, the joy, sorrow, love, grief, beauty, and glory of life would be forever shaded with the knowledge of what’s to come. ‘Does Memory Last,’ a question each of us may ponder, when we lose a loved one or are facing death. ‘Old Woman,’ is a poignant look at the young woman that exists in all, under the veil of wrinkles and aging. There were so many poems in this book that touched cords deeply within me, as to bring smiles to my lips, joy to my heart, thoughtfulness to my mind and grief inside of me. A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS is an astoundingly, wonderous trip through the thoughts, life, and emotions we all go through in life. In the pages of this book, everyone will find something that will help them grow or understand themselves better. I highly recommend it. Sebastian's Master's is under-going a great deal of suspicion. 5.0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL CONTINUATION OF THE SERIES October 21, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition The author really shows his mettle in this story. Mr. Nosach has taken on the topic of abuse, drinking and suicide. Adams best friend Curtis is being beaten by his drunken father and gets to the point where he finds only one solution. Adam feels the loss profoundly and Sebastian doesn't know how to handle his nephews grief. The story is told with compassion and I gave it five stars for sensitive story telling The story starts off with Hart, a teenager who has lost pretty much everything and washes up in Fairy Falls, the idyllic town mentioned above. Hart’s only living relative, his Aunt Gertie (who is so awesome, one of my favorite characters), owns a huge blueberry farm and lives in Fairy Falls and agrees to take him in once she finds out his mother, her niece, was murdered the previous year. That’s where the intrigue starts. There’s a killer on the loose in Fairy Falls and they seem to be targeting Hart’s family and anyone related to them, as well as people related to Diana MacGregor, one of the first friends Hart makes in Fairy Falls and the daughter of the town’s mayor. That’s all I’ll say about the plot, because I don’t want to include spoilers, but suffice to say that the mystery includes a lot of unexpected twists and turns, and also moments of hilarity that balanced the suspense nicely. Lauren M. Sapala 5.0 out of 5 starsGreat for summer reading, fun and entertaining June 6, 2019 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase This novel might be the BEST book for summer reading EVER. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and it takes place in an idyllic tourist town that thrives during the summer season. It also revolves around a whodunit-style mystery plot that genuinely had me guessing until the very end. And although this is very definitely a Young Adult novel, it will have no problem appealing to adults too. I’m not a huge YA reader myself and I adored the characters and the story.
