Lottie's Adventure: Facing The Monster, is an action-packed children's book written especially for ages 8 through 14. Children will enjoy this exciting read while also improving their reading skills. Twenty-nine chapters filled with twists and turns keep kids reading to discover the outcome. Lottie, a lively ten-year old Hispanic girl, longs for something new and different in her life. Her summers up to this point have all been, more or less, the same. Then the arrival of a magical letter and a TV newscast transforms her vacation time in a high adventure. Her great adventure includes trying to relate to a cold, estranged, and rich grandmother, freeing a kidnapped ten-year-old African American boy from a locked room, hiding him in a safe place, and then fleeing with him from a kidnapper who is always just a step or two behind. Lottie's Adventure is a vibrant chapter book mystery for preteens that emphasizes the importance of intergenerational communication and love as well as the immense value of thinking beyond cultural stereotypes. To develop a new moral code or vision, both these elements are crucial. Perhaps the most striking quality of "Lottie's Adventure: Facing The Monster" is its powerful positive energy. Featuring a spunky 10-year-old Hispanic heroine, "Lottie's Adventure" keeps interest high and pages turning with exciting plot twists and turns and believable cliffhangers that just keep evolving. The author allows her characters to develop very naturally, with total authenticity. There are many excellent ideas embedded in the story, not the least of which is that people, even wise adults, can learn to admit they are wrong. "Lottie's Adventure" goes a long way towards building a viable alternative to prejudice, and for that and many other reasons, it is highly recommended juvenile reading for kids age 10 and up. While reading Barbara Frances’ chapter book Lottie’s Adventure: Facing the Monster, I was swept back to the books of my childhood. A place where tweens helped each other and became heroes without the use of make-believe or magic brooms. Just plain old smarts, ingenuity, and integrity. I was engrossed in the story of Lottie, a Hispanic girl, as she helped Charles Ray a black boy, who had been kidnapped escape and confront the bad guy, outsmarting him, while facing their own fears. The friendship that grew between the two was a lesson in how people all want the same things out of life regardless of their upbringing, race, or nationality. It is a compelling and wonderful tale that I’d recommend to both adults and the tween alike.

When I decided to write this book on relationship, my wife Barbara was surprised and cautioned me by saying that she would not dare write such a book because it was such a varied topic with so many nuances. That scared me because she is certainly more qualified to write about relationship than I am. I hesitated for a while. Most of my writing had been on housing, business, woodworking, even publishing, but nothing on relationship. It's an expansive topic and I wasn't sure if my information would be of real value. I considered that all my books are based on first hand experience and realized that even though I'm not an expert, I have a life time of experience in relationship. Based on that I felt able to contribute something helpful to some readers and I feel good about this book. The author did a fantastic job writing this book. In the first chapter he defines love, "a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person." If you have ever been in one then you know that it is a give and take in order to survive. Compromising is so important. It all depends on which stage of the game you are in. I am in my 40's so my experiences are different than those who are teenagers, whom could benefit from reading this book. They say that those that experienced it can give advice and tips of what they have learned to help you avoid tender mistakes. I especially liked the harmful relationships, mutual respect and boundaries chapters as I need to learn all of them once again. As a codependent it helps to keep me on track in my current relationships even if they are not love related, which includes friend, family and coworkers. Anyone could benefit from the helpful book with tips and thoughts of a personal experienced writer. I researched a lot of books on this subject before I chose this one, and I'm glad I did. A family member bought me some books on starting a business and they didn't really cover any of the information I was looking for. This business is a business however you sell yourself and your abilities, not a product made somewhere else by someone else in a rented space. This book was informative and gave practical knowledge and experience that was easy to understand. I would recommend this book to those who are thinking about going out on your own, and those who already have... Have You Ever Made A Mistake That Keeps Coming Back To Haunt You?On the run from her ex-boyfriend’s powerful criminal family, Sara Jones hides in Billings, Montana. When she receives a mysterious package containing a hidden spider, people around her start dying from poisonous spider bites and she fears that the family has found her. Is it possible to escape their reach? ˃˃˃ From its gut-grabbing prologue to its explosive conclusion, Goss’s debut story gives new meaning to the phrase “a blood-curdling adventure.”Life takes an even more bizarre turn when Sara seems to be not only immune to the spider venom, but also surrounded by a sinister group of people using spiders to incapacitate their prey. Even her new boyfriend starts acting suspiciously. Who can she trust? To make matters worse Sara's twenty-fifth birthday approaches, and her dark heritage begins to emerge. She is forced to make a life-or-death decision. And somehow, she must find a way to deal with the crime family. ˃˃˃ An Imaginative Fantasy-Thriller That Will Stimulate Your Senses Goss immerses the reader in a gripping tale in which spiders are trained to kill. To some, the story may seem far-fetched, and cult members eating the flesh of cadavers may seem abhorrent, but Dracula set that table long ago. Tegen Cave is sure to thrill anyone predisposed to the fantasy genre. International Award Winning Bestselling Author Inge-Lise Goss
Critical Acclaim for the Tegen Series
"This novel has romance, action, drama and a lot of thrills for readers who love horror novels. You can actually feel your skin crawl when you read scenes about spiders. I loved Sara; she is relatable and she is strong." -- Rabia Tanveer, Readers' Favorite Reviewer ★★★★★ "Unique and full of suspense, The Tegen Cave offers plenty to keep you interested. Inge-Lise Goss has created a new 'race' of individuals with unusual attributes, but maintains the mystery of whether or not they are 'good guys' against the obvious bad drug deals and pornographers." --Melinda Hills, Readers' Favorite Reviewer ★★★★★ "Creepy and twisted, yet addicting & Intriguing." --Jenny Bynum Black Words-White Pages ★★★★★ "The storyline was like nothing I have ever read before. It was fantastic." --Obsessiveglider ★★★★★ "Suspenseful & full of twists and turns, masterfully written." --Amazon Reviewer ★★★★★ Laura and Gerry head to Jamaica for a celebratory trip. Once again Laura, despite her best efforts, gets in the middle of a murder investigation when a fellow tourist is killed. Drug smugglers, a voodoo priestess and ugly dudes oh my!!!! The dead guy was a jerk but did he really deserve Eshu? Laura and Gerry Are At It Again, Mon!
I’ve come to like Laura over the past few books and see she’s evolved quite a bit in this book. Now happily married, she and Gerry are trying to start a family and decide Jamaica would be the perfect spot to begin their “preparations” but as you’ve already guessed, someone croaks. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers but there is a lot of action and intrigue that only a banton (storyteller) like Karen Vaughan can deliver. With shady characters, a voodoo priestess/con-artist and a raging a**hole, Jamaica Dead sends you deep into the criminal underworld while keeping you guessing as to what’s next. There were several twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and that attests to the author’s ability to weave a great mystery novel. Laura and Gerry are your typical Canadians, willing to help out in a pinch even if they’re not asked. This makes them loveable to the readers but annoying to the criminal element. They, particularly Laura, put their lives on the line and get in the cross hairs of a dangerous drug cartel to solve the murder of someone they didn’t even like. That’s so Canadian by the way! Anyway, I gave Jamaica Dead 5 stars yuh dun know (of course). The year rolled in with a big bang, fireworks, and celebrations. A fresh start to a brand-new year.
The mesmerizing sight of Madison standing in his doorway struck Taylor to the core. It was love at first sight. Madison was caught unawares by the way she felt. She was love struck. Taylor was smitten and gladly accepted her invitation to a party. The last day of the year was about to become the first day of a whole new experience for Madison and Taylor. A budding romance that flourished, but not without ups and downs thrown in the mix. Detectives Joe Leverette and Philip Marsden are assigned to investigate the murder of a woman who was found dismembered in Port Huron, Michigan. After investigations, it is discovered the murderer is going after the individuals who found each of the body parts. Leverette becomes interested in Carole Sage, one of the women involved, who is a sensitive but is unable to pursue her due to her involvement in the case. His colleagues in the police force notice the infatuation he has for the woman, but she does not. The witnesses dream about the murderer removing the particular body part they would eventually find, are startled awake and then they hear an owl hoot several times. Fearing skepticism, they don't reveal their dreams to law enforcement. Carole Sage actually sees the original murder plus the murder of the individual witnesses. Police Chief Billingsley understands the gift she possesses and arranges a sting operation in order to catch the murderer which fails. Two witnesses are dead and they don't want any more to die. This books is for 18+ due to the violence. Highly Suspenseful, Well-Written Murder Mystery Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2015 Verified Purchase This highly suspenseful, well-written murder mystery opens with a grizzly, horrific murder that gives nightmares to several people not related to the murder in any way. Likable, believable characters draw the reader into the nightmare, while the baffled but competent police work feverishly to stop the killer before he kills again. I highly recommend this book. Ms. Drewa, write faster! A DYNAMITE TALE TOLD MASTERFULLY
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2020 Verified Purchase Midnight Owl: A Joe Leverette Mystery – book 1 kept me reading till the wee hours of the night. Yes, it has a lot of very gruesome scenes in it, but it holds you in the palm of its hands until the last page. Ms. Drewa out did herself when she wrote this book. I was on the edge of my seat, my eyes burning, yet I couldn’t put it down. A dynamite tale told masterfully. Within its pages you will find a bit of the paranormal, a bit of romance, and a lot of suspense as the murderer goes on his rampage. Highly Recommended. She fought to get to keep her last baby, but lost, and Dinky had to learn how to be a horse without the help of his mother. Friendless and frightened he made his way. Dinky is now 11 and a handsome boy, though the heartache is sometimes still seen in his eyes. Written from his point of view and based on true events, his story will break your heart and put it back together. THIS SPECIAL IS FOR ONE WEEK ONLY, my Thanksgiving gift to you. A Story about Horses, Humans, Cruelty, and Hope
This is the second book I've read from Marta Moran Bishop. In Dinky: The Nurse Mare's Foal, Bishop explores the real and dramatized history of her real-life foal, Dinky. The horse was born to a nurse mare, a horse that is mated for the sole purpose of keeping a supply of milk for high dollar foals. Dinky was taken from his mother and denied a normal upbringing for the sake of profit. It's a heartbreaking tale about how humans exploit these creatures and the effect the practice has on the horses themselves. As with other books by Ms. Bishop, this book is steeped in drama and contains harsh realities couched within the story. It makes you think about horses, humans, and humanity in general. I loved this book. It was eye-opening for me and made me re-think the horse industry. If you enjoy a deeply emotional story that leaves you with a sense of hope for a better future, you'll love Dinky Before retiring France Hunter decides to go to the place where she found her first new species of owl: The Amazon. Her group follows a well know angler, John Sinclair, and his team, along with a reporter who wants to do a story on Hunter. Once arriving at the site, Sinclair leaves to go further up the river. He has a show to record and is hoping to catch an even larger fish this time. Hunter, and the group with her, run into a gruesome nightmare with the satellite phone destroyed and one man fighting for life. Sinclair is not due to pick them up for another week. Will they survive? The Angler and the Owl is an adventurous novel with a bit of mystery and romance added into the mix.
France Hunter and her team go on a trip to study a new species of owls. Tagging along for the trip is TV host John Sinclair. Sparks fly between France and John as the trip continues. However, they’re briefly separated when John and his team set out on a different path to film for his show. While John’s away, trouble looms for France and the rest of the team. An animal attack on a crew member along with no communication to the outside world leaves the team in a perilous situation. Meanwhile, John can’t help but shake the feeling that something’s wrong. Yet, he’s torn between work and France. Will John reach France and the team in time before it’s too late? Overall, I enjoyed the story. I loved how the characters were owl watchers and nature lovers, that’s what made the story for me. The author does a good job of describing the scenery, making you think you’re traveling with the group. I liked the budding relationship with France and John, they’re two characters who fit well together. The supporting characters of Doc, Tony, and Andy made the story by providing humor as they led the expedition and tried to play matchmaker. The story offered lots of adventure along with mystery. Laura and Gerry are at it again. Death finds them close to home when a tenant is found in the dumpster behind their apartment building. Laura is thrust into the “who killed Denny?” mystery while she does battle with a tenant and dodges a school janitor. The life of a college student is never boring, but she wishes it would be! Dead Men Don’t Swing is a biting, funny, deliciously bawdy and fast-paced murder mystery in which “death by sexual misadventure and a wayward poisonous snake” (among other things) make for pure entertainment gold.” In this book, Laura and her husband Gerry are back dealing with another murder investigation since, as Laura explains, she's a 'corpse magnet.' This time a dead body turns up in a dumpster at the apartment complex where Laura and Gerry are managers, having fallen to his death from the balcony above. Not likely an accident—the guy is wearing boxer shorts and sporting a tricked-out stiletto in his forehead. Oh yeah, he's missing some sensitive body parts—yikes! Dead Men Don't Swing is Karen Vaughan's bawdy, comedic take on amateur sleuthing. It’s book four in her Laura & Gerry Mystery series. Lots of detective lingo is delivered with wit and sarcasm by the protagonist, Laura. That's not surprising if you’ve read Vaughan's previous books in the series and given the fact that the author has done a bit of stand-up comedy. In this book, Laura and her husband Gerry are back dealing with another murder investigation since, as Laura explains, she's a 'corpse magnet.' This time a dead body turns up in a dumpster at the apartment complex where Laura and Gerry are managers, having fallen to his death from the balcony above. Not likely an accident—the guy is wearing boxer shorts and sporting a tricked-out stiletto in his forehead. Oh yeah, he's missing some sensitive body parts—yikes! Things are not as they seem in this suburban Canadian apartment complex. It turns out there's a whole lot of hanky-panky going on in this mid-rise Peyton Place, some of it pretty kinky stuff, too. There's no shortage of pervs and perps on any floor, in addition to the ever-annoying, tenant-from-hell, Stella. As I type the name, I hear Marlon Brando screaming it at the top of his lungs in A Streetcar Named Desire. And, speaking of movies, the photographer played by Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcock's Rear Window, would have been hard-pressed to know where to shoot first with all the action going on in this complex! Laura, studying to become a CSI, makes the best of the situation and starts racking up the A-pluses as she incorporates aspects of the investigation into her homework assignments. Of course, even an A-student can get into trouble when word gets out about the direction in which her studiousness is leading. Laura is soon stalked, badgered and beleaguered by tenants and non-tenants alike as the 'serpentine' [if you read the book you’ll get my choice of words] plot twists put Laura and her husband Gerry to the test. Will Laura live long enough to get credentialed as a CSI? Will she and Gerry figure out whodunit and why? Will they ever again make that laundry room at the apartment complex a place you might want to wash your clothes? You'll have to read the book to find the answers to these and other disturbingly funny questions raised by Karen Vaughan in Dead Men Don't Swing. |
