Robert W. Walker has long been a favorite author of mine. I have been thrilled, chilled, and terrorized with his Instinct, Decoy, and other suspense thrillers, but recently have begun reading his historical novels.
His Children of Salem spawned much thought in me regarding the Salem witch trials and the motivations around them, his Annie’s War Trilogy showed me a side of the Civil War and prejudice even among those who believed as I do in all men/women are created equal that dumbfounded me. The Cannoneers, which he views as a YA novel is to me a book for all ages. While it may not have the romantic bits he writes in his other historical novels, it depicts so clearly a point in the history of the USA as to share space in my mind with any of the others. Mr. Walker is a masterful storyteller, be it a thriller, a mystery, a story of the unnatural, or a historical novel as The Cannoneers is he draws a reader so thoroughly into the story as to make history come alive. I believe this book will go down in history as one of the greats of our day and recommend it to anyone whether they are a history buff or not. It is a great read.
